UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
