Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
