Per insights from a ex- senior officer from the Metropolitan police, police departments are increasingly pressured to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a surge in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Case Study: Train Stabbing in Cambridgeshire

Early Sunday, British Transport Police announced the arrest of two men following a mass stabbing on a railway carriage in the region. One suspect, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were taken into custody. Subsequently, the older suspect was released with no charges, and police stated he was not involved in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, new guidelines were issued to tackle the dissemination of false narratives on social media, which had escalated after the deadly attack of three schoolgirls in Southport previously.

Yet, advocates have raised concerns that this approach could lead to an excessive focus on the racial background of those accused and fuel further extremist narratives when details are not shared with the general population.

Insights from a Former Officer

A former chief superintendent, who worked in the UK's largest police force, labeled the need for police to reveal the ethnicity of suspects in incidents involving people of colour as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He expressed understanding for his former colleagues in the force, explaining that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, described it “sad” but essential for authorities to quickly disclose the racial identities of those detained.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he remarked, stating that online platforms are leveraged to push agendas, making it vital for law enforcement to provide facts to counter rumors.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the official disclosure, right-leaning politicians had demanded a faster response. For instance, the shadow home secretary urged for prompt sharing of suspect information, while the Reform UK leader posted on the platform formerly known as Twitter that the public needed to know “without delay”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the incident. One account named “UK Nationalist”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting a religious phrase.

Ongoing Suspicion

Despite authorities confirmed that the suspects were UK citizens, certain individuals continued to insinuate that details was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the attack was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to police assurances to the opposite.

Guidance Background

The guidance were created by the UK police leadership body in recognition of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.

This move came soon after a political party alleged that officials of hiding the identities and immigration status of two men charged in a separate case in Warwickshire.

Precedents

In May, when a vehicle drove into spectators marking Liverpool FC’s winning, local authorities revealed that the arrested man was a white UK national to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

Police leaders stressed that choices on disclosing these details would be made by individual police forces, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Confirming a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the UK interior ministry, not police.
