We are analyzing images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
