Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
