Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The former official announced he would step back from public positions after House committee made public his regular communications with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.

He commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await observing their progress".

The former Harvard president, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' choice to step down.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to approve a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to release its documents on Epstein.

The bill will then move to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has said he intends to endorse the measure, after reversing his stance on the subject following pushback from his followers.

Message Details

A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the legislative panel days ago included several well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The communications revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect the academic to influential international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were released with the wider community, the former official expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the persons most important to me".

Career Background

Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public duties earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal think tank in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.

The former official joined the leadership of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
