Contaminated Seafood Crisis: The Nation Confronts Contamination in Key Industrial Area
An extensive industrial complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive contamination following a government taskforce detected presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants inside the area, that encompasses businesses that export chilled seafood.

Officials issued an advisory advising suppliers and sellers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the found amount was well under the authority's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an immediate risk to the public.
The FDA stated: “The main health effect of worry following extended, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through eating of polluted food or water over time) is an elevated chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”
Widespread Pollution and Health Examinations
Radiation tests showed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one other production sites, but confirmed they would promptly undergo decontamination procedures conducted by the country's nuclear agency.
A senior official declared that people living in strongly contaminated zones would be relocated until the location was cleaned, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.
Medical authorities also performed examinations on nearby workers and residents located near the industrial estate, identifying 9 individuals who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. They were sent to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.
Decontamination and Containment Measures
The contaminated locations will immediately undergo decontamination operations by Indonesia's nuclear agency. Authorities have also selected the site of a recycled metal factory as an isolation facility for polluted materials.
Indonesia, which has no atomic energy facilities or weapons programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from overseas.
Origin of Contamination and Import Restrictions
A taskforce representative informed the media that scrap metal imports were the probable source of contamination and announced the authorities would promptly enforce limits on scrap metal imports. He said that transport were additionally being inspected for potential contamination as they traveled through the area.
