Chicago White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Deal.
In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.
Financial Terms and Incentives
The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16M for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for winning the MVP award.
- $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
His deal also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization get a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to play for the Chicago franchise, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a equalizing shot in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.
