Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unwanted offerings could be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures during her travels. The diverse haul reportedly features gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date is yet to be set, although the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with the revenue benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items are said to be locked away in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away for years.

A complete inventory has not yet been made public, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was presented in parliament. The query centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

A Global Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from foreign leaders and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to handle the protocol gifts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
