A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the company of a well-known sushi chain, which runs locations throughout Japan and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a regular bidder at the yearly January sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared in no time."

This new purchase exceeds his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

From Auction to Plate

The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied patron.
