Accused Harasser Inquired: 'But What If I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman indicted with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly left her a voicemail message which questioned: "what if I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who witnesses stated has persistently declared she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial charged with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, the tribunal was told communication data and evidence recovered from phones logged Ms Wandelt persistently asking Madeleine's mother for a DNA test over 2023 and 2024.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is one of the most covered missing child cases and remains unsolved.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
A separate recorded message, presented in court, recorded Ms Wandelt stating: "I know I'm heavy and not pretty like Madeleine had been, but I feel what I believe."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's recording said: "Imagine there is a tiny probability that I am she? Then what? Wouldn't that be important for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I maintain a living here in Poland, I just want to understand," the recording stated.
The panel was advised that via electronic messages, text messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt requested a genetic test, sent youth pictures to her phone in a bid to demonstrate a similarity to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "flashbacks" from a childhood with the McCanns.
Robert Jones, an intelligence analyst with law enforcement who compiled the data, advised the court there "showed no any answers" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also reached out to close associates of the McCanns, as per the call data.
On 9 October 2024, Mr McCann responded to a call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "incorrect contact information."
During that incident Ms Wandelt recorded a voicemail on Mrs McCann's answerphone declaring "I will persist and I plan to establish my point."
The court was informed Mrs Spragg struck up a relationship via internet with Ms Wandelt prior to accompanying her on a appearance to the McCanns' residence in that area in that winter.
Call logs showed Mrs Spragg had communicated through WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to express the media had depicted Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she deserved to be considered genuine in the period before the trip to that location, Leicestershire, in December 2024.
The court learned communications between the two individuals, in November 2024, planning trying to obtain Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her bins or from cutlery at a eating establishment.
"We have to make a stand," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the appearance to their residence, the defendant sent a message which stated: "We are sitting adjacent to the McCanns' home with our headlights off like private investigators. I had hoped to achieve this with someone else I hadn't anticipated I would be doing that with the McCanns."
The proceedings proceeds.
